Pockets were deep, and checkbooks were open on Saturday at the 2013 Bee County Junior Livestock and Homemakers Show premium sale. This year’s tentative sale total is $429,720.

It is higher than last year’s sale by $16,000 and growing. This year’s number is not final yet.

Buyers have 10 days from the date of the sale to pay for their purchase.

Bee County Extension Agent Matt Bochat said there will still be add-ons when people pay for their product and additional people will come forward and give money to a project.

This year, the sale also did not include the scholarships that were previously counted as part of the sale. The scholarships last year accounted for more than $20,000 that sale.

The animal that went for the highest price was Riley Huie’s grand champion steer that sold for $12,000. Last year’s grand champion steer sold for $8,000.

The second highest grossing animal was Ariana Haws’ grand champion lamb that sold for $10,000. Last year’s champion lamb sold for $6,000.

“The results from the sale were fabulous,” Bochat said.

Some buyers at this year’s event were regulars, while Bochat said others were new buyers and there was new money out at this year’s premium sale.

Bochat, who has only been the ag agent for two years, said it appeared that there was higher attendance at both the sale and the judging throughout the week.

“Most of the exhibitors and parents that I spoke with were very pleased with the show,” Bochat said.

For such a large event, there were few noticeable mishaps.

“You are going to have hiccups in any large event,” Bochat said. “I think we are going to re-evaluate a few things.”
