Trojan JV point guard Robert Torres did a good job directing traffic on Friday night to help the young Trojans post a 47-31 victory over the visiting Gregory-Portland Wildcats.
“We started strong with a good first quarter that included balanced scoring as we had five different kids score in the first. Our press helped set the defensive tone for us as that was the key all night,” said JV coach Michael Hernandez.
The Trojans seemed to sense when the Wildcats were ready to make a run and the Beeville boys would put up a stop on defense or hit a quick basket from the outside to squelch any such G-P thoughts.
The young Trojans led 16-7 at the end of one quarter. The Wildcats got one point back by halftime as the Trojans took a 27-19 lead into the locker rooms.
The Trojans led by 10, 37-27, at the end of the third period and cruised in the fourth by holding the Wildcats to just four markers.
Two JV Trojans reached double figures. Dylan Castillo led the team with 16 points, including three treys. Tommy Dominguez followed with 11 with one trey. Robert Torres sank eight points. Jonathan Huser scored four and contributed a few blocks on defense from his post position. Jonathan Moses had one long-range jumper, and Gabriel Cardenas also had three points. Josh Salazar had two.
“We were solid defensively, but we were not as good offensively as we were on Tuesday against Tuloso-Midway and that was why our defensive pressure was key all night,” Hernandez said.
The young Trojans are 11-13 on the year and 4-7 in district play. On Tuesday, the Beeville boys closed their season with a game in Victoria against the West Warriors.
