BEEVILLE — The Trojans played one of their best games of the year, and the Gregory-Portland Wildcats had no answer for the Beeville inside and outside attack on Friday night. The Trojan varsity basketball squad captured an easy 71-51 victory over the visitors.

“I thought this was one of our better games this year; we put together four pretty good quarters. We shot the ball fairly well, and we rebounded the ball for a change,” said head coach Mike Luce.

The Beeville defense made its presence known right from the opening tip. The Wildcats found themselves looking up at a 10-0 Beeville start before they were able to dent the scoreboard.

That lone basket was all the Wildcats could manage over the first eight minutes as the Beeville defense and rebounding closed out several chances. The Trojans led comfortably 22-2 at the end of the first quarter.

That early advantage would prove to be the difference. The two teams played evenly the rest of the way. Each team added 49 points to their side of the scoreboard through the final three quarters. The Beeville boys took a 39-22 lead into the halftime intermission, and it was 51-32 heading to the final stanza.

The Trojan offense was a balanced attack. Guards Brent Reyna and Lucas Glew reached double figures while inside Cameron Kremers and Tyler Stewart also added double-digit totals for the hosts.

The final quarter had the Beeville boys pour in 20 points and the G-P crew hit for 19 to make the final a 20-point triumph.

“Our guards found the open man most of the night, and we played good defense. We still need to take better care of the ball, but, all in all, I was very pleased,” Luce said.

Reyna led the JHS scoring with 21 points. Glew produced 16 while Kremers and Stewart worked inside and around the lane for 12 apiece. Joe Rey Garza added four markers. Cody Vasquez and Hunter Hardy each contributed three.

The Trojans closed their season on Tuesday night with a road game in Victoria against the West Warriors.
