Sandcrabs grab tennis title

BEEVILLE — The Calhoun Sandcrabs captured first place in the annual Trojan Invitational Tennis Tournament on Friday.

The tournament was so competitive that one point separated first place and third place. The Sandcrabs won the first place team trophy with 11 points. Victoria West came in second with 10 ½ points, and Beeville was third with 10.

Trojan Eric Dehnert fell short of winning his second gold of the year as he was defeated by Ryder Billo (Goliad) in the men’s singles championship match. Billo, who was the tournament’s defending champion, had to go three sets to defeat Dehnert, 7-5, 2-6, 6-0.

Lady Trojan Cori Moore won the silver medal, falling to Victoria Perez (Orange Grove), 6-2, 6-3. Perez also beat out Moore last year to claim the gold medal.

In men’s doubles, Trojans Colton Wren and Roberto Reyna captured the silver medal. In the championship round, Wren and Reyna were defeated by Bennett and Charoenpeanlert (Victoria West), 6-0, 6-0. Lucas Guerrero and Jesse Garza went 1-1 in the tournament

Also competing for the Trojans were Graham Traylor and Emily Barris (mixed doubles). They went 1-1 in the tournament. Samantha Ramon and Karla Martinez teamed up in girls doubles, while Cori Sparks and Miranda Cardenas played singles.

Men’s singles: Gold medal – Ryder Billo (Goliad), Silver medal – Eric Dehnert (Beeville).Bronze – Jeffrey Kubena (Victoria West) .

Ladies’ singles: Gold medal – Victoria Perez (Orange Grove), Silver medal – Cori Moore (Beeville), Bronze medal – Holly Leal (Calhoun).

Men’s consolation: Colin Janecka (Victoria East)

Ladies’ consolation-Sarah Whitley (George West).

Men’s doubles: Gold Medal – Bennett/Charoenpeanloert (V. West), Silver medal – Wren/Reyna (Beeville), Bronze medal – Hsu/Yeh (Calhoun)

Ladies’ doubles: Gold medal – Mosley/Wilson (Calhoun), Silver medal – Hennessey/Oliver (V.West) Bronze meda – Brown/Holt (George West).

Men’s consolation: Clifford/Perez (San Antonio Lanier)

Ladies’ consolation: Stephenson/Smith (Port Aransas).

Mixed doubles: Gold medal – Tovias/Lara (San Antonio Lanier), Silver medal – Daniels/Ta (Calhoun), Bronze medal – Rodriguez/Contreras (San Antonio Lanier).

Mixed doubles consolation: Wright/Zollars (Port Aransas).
