The youth art program was open to area students from 1st through 12th grade in public, private or home schools. This year, organizers received 472 submissions of original works of art in various mediums. The judges recognized 65 students in several age and media categories.
This year’s theme “Our Land, Our People” paid tribute to the heritage of South Texas. Students were encouraged to study their surroundings with a sense of pride and give their interpretation of the theme through painting, drawing and photography. Each student also had to write an essay to accompany one’s art.
Winners received cash awards of $25, $50 and $100, depending on placing. Each first-place winner’s instructor received $50. Visionarios artwork and essays will be on exhibit at the Art Museum through March 3. For more information on Visionarios, visit www.artmuseumofsouthtexas.org.
