James was preceded in death by his brothers, David Knight and Tom C. Knight; father, Jack G. Knight; and his namesake uncle, Leland F. Knight.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Elizabeth Welder Knight, of New Braunfels, Texas; and his brother, Michael J. Knight, sister-in-law, Katie Knight and niece, Jenny Knight of Mineral, Texas. He is also survived by uncles, R.J. Welder Jr., John H. Miller Jr.; aunts, Louise Welder Hall, Josephine Welder Miller; as well as many cousins and friends.
James was a life-long resident of Beeville, having attended Beeville schools, Kingsville A&I, Sul Ross University and graduated from Southwest State University with a degree in business. He worked the oil patch and operated Knight Ranch Services for several years, loved the outdoors and spent much of his time game ranching on his mother’s property. James was also vice president of Dove Hill Horse Ranch, Inc. James helped find and recover his brother Tom’s body when Tom drowned in the Rio Grand River at Quemado for which the family will be forever grateful. James loved raising his terrier dogs and, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Williams Adoptable’s, P.O. Box 1509 Beeville, Texas 78104; St. Joseph’s Church Beeville, Texas or a charity of your choice.
Pallbearers were Mitchell Box, Sid Hall, Monte Hall, Raymond Hall, Patrick Hall and Clark Welder.
Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, at Oak Park Memorial Funeral Home. A rosary was held there at 7 o'clock that evening. The funeral Mass was celebrated at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment followed at the St. Joseph Cemetery.
