The Karankawa were early inhabitants of the Texas coast and resided in areas as far inland as present-day Goliad County.
The Spanish brought a way of life that thrives in the community of La Bahía to this day. Architecture, language, food, and Roman Catholicism are the most notable examples.
Several La Bahía families can even trace their ancestral heritage back to the soldiers who settled here nearly 265 years ago. There is no doubt that the early Spanish influence is as much a part of La Bahía as American culture. But centuries before either of these groups arrived, the Karankawa Indians called this area home, and they too left an indelible mark upon the land and people.
