The Epistle of Romans is the nuts and bolts of everyday Christian living. Paul began this message by saying he had been “set apart for the gospel of God”. He then explained that this gospel had been promised through God’s prophets in the Holy Scriptures “regarding His Son, who as to His human nature was a descendant of David, and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by His resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 1:3-4)
Nearly a thousand years before the birth of Christ, God had revealed the future line of David to the prophet Nathan. He promised David, “When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish His kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of His kingdom forever.” (2 Samuel 7:12, 13) We find the fulfillment of this prophecy in Jesus’ birth, which was verified by at least three ancient historians: Tacitus of Rome, Josephus, and Pliny.
The genealogy of Jesus Christ is recorded in the gospels of both Matthew and Luke. Matthew documented the royal line from Solomon, David’s royal son, through Joseph, Jesus’ adopted father. Luke’s genealogy recorded the legal line of the Virgin Mary, from Jesus backward to David’s other son Nathan. Because of Joseph and Mary’s marriage, Jesus was the legal son of David through Nathan’s blood line, and He was the royal son of David by adoption through Solomon’s blood line.
More than five centuries before Jesus’ birth, the prophet Daniel also foretold His coming. "In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a Son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into His presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and His kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.” (Daniel 7:13, 14)
Jesus Christ is the legal, royal, and true Messiah.
