The first annual Beeville Spring Clean was held at about this time last year and it was a roaring success. People in pickups and vehicles pulling trailers came from all over the city to take advantage of the special event.
Hardy and his boss, Code Compliance Officer Lanny Holland, are hoping this year’s event will be just as successful.
City crews will be at the city yard from 8 a.m. until the crowds quit coming that day to fill special containers provided by Allied Waste Services of Corpus Christi.
Tires, paint and batteries are off the list of items the city will take, Hardy said. Old furniture, construction materials, fencing materials, doors, windows, old lawn mowers, broken appliances, yard wastes and things of that nature definitely are on the list.
Hardy said this year the city staff and volunteers of the Bee Proud Bee Clean organization will work together in an effort to clean up the city again.
Although the city will use volunteers again, those people will be cleaning up areas where nobody else will be available to do the work.
For the most part, the city is looking for property owners, renters, businesses and the general public to take advantage of the special day to get some cleaning done around the place and take advantage of a free opportunity to dump the refuse.
Hardy and Holland also are encouraging people to help out the elderly and disabled neighbors in the areas where they live. Many of those people are unable to load trash and rubbish into a pickup. Or they have no truck to load.
Last year the city ended up with a mountain of trash at the city yard, making City Street Superintendent Albert Bridge a proud and happy man.
Even if the city crews manage to fill every container, they plan to pile up what they cannot get into containers and take that material to the Allied Waste landfill in the future.
Residents are asked to report to the front gate on South Jackson Street at the city yard where they will be directed to the proper area of the city yard to have their items collected.
Anyone who has a question may call Holland at City Hall at 358-4641.
