Patrolman Patrick Mitchell reported that he was sent to a home in the 900 block of East Huntington Street after the woman called police to say that Christopher Campos was going to kill her. She said Campos had called her and threatened her.
She said Campos also claimed that if she called police, he would also kill them.
Detective Sgt. Chris Bernal said the wife called the manager of the apartment where he was living and told her about the call.
Then she called police.
The manager later reported that she looked outside to see Campos going to his truck carrying a rifle case. At that point she retreated and did not confront the man.
When Mitchell arrived at the intended victim’s house, he told her and her mother to lie down on the floor and the officer stood by the front door with his back to the wall, waiting for Campos to arrive.
As he waited, Mitchell heard over his radio that Bernal and Patrolman Ryan Treviño had spotted Campos driving to the woman’s house at a high rate of speed.
As Campos sped into the driveway on East Huntington, officers surrounded the vehicle, drew their weapons and ordered the man to turn off the ignition and step out of the truck with his hands in the air.
Mitchell said Bernal ordered Campos several times to comply but he refused. About 20 seconds passed before the suspect followed orders.
After officers took Campos into custody, they looked inside the vehicle and found a 12-gauge pump shotgun inside a gun case.
The detective said the gun was not loaded but Campos had the bolt open and shells in an elastic carrier on the gunstock.
Bernal said Campos was taken to the Bee County Jail and charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Both offenses are second degree felonies and the suspect could receive a prison sentence of from two to 20 years and a fine of $10,000 on each charge if he is convicted.
Bonds were set at $5,000 on each. He was released after posting surety bonds on April 6.
Bernal said Justice of the Peace Raul Casarez issued a protective order against Campos the day he was released from custody.
The detective said Campos told officers when he was arrested that “I was just coming to talk to my wife.”
But he did have the shotgun in his vehicle.
“I don’t know what would have happened if we weren’t there,” Bernal said.
