City manager interviews to be conducted

BEEVILLE – Forty percent of the 25 applicants for Beeville’s city manager’s position are not qualified.

That was the message from Interim City Manager Marvin Townsend on Feb. 11 when the council met.

Townsend said advertisements seeking applicants have run in local and area newspapers as well as in statewide publications read by persons seeking that type of employment.

The former city manager at Corpus Christi said he believes that four to six of the applicants for the position are “quite qualified.”

Townsend said he intends to break down the most qualified applicants into three or four groups before inviting them to come to Beeville for interviews with the council.

He said he would expect two or three of the applicants to back out before they are interviewed.

Townsend said he will plan for interviews to be conducted on Tuesday evenings.

In other business, the council voted to:

— Approve the installation of a crosswalk at the corner of West Stamper and South Minnesota streets.

— Authorize the city to pay the $535 in annual dues to maintain membership in the Texas Main Street Program.

— Allow the city to purchase a second blower for the Chase Field Wastewater Treatment Plant at a cost of $5,504. The purchase was included in this year’s budget.

— Authorize the city to provide an unused Beeville Police Department vehicle for Bee County’s Office of Community Affairs.

— Accept a report from Kaspar Properties, Inc. on its job creation requirements as part of a a five-year tax abatement agreement with the city.

— Approve hiring attorney Martha Warner to review ordinances included in a codification program underway by an outside company.

She is expected to spend about 120 hours on the project and will be paid $150 an hour.

— Award a contract with World Technical Services, Inc. of San Antonio for seven months of janitorial services at City Hall.

The contract will cost the city $16,874.55 with a two-year option for continuation at the same price. The company will hire local residents for the service provided here.
