Jones track athletes open at Cabaniss

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Trojan track teams raced to open their season at the CCISD Metro Relays at Cabaniss Sports Complex on Saturday.

The teams competing included King, Carroll, Goliad, Gregory-Portland, Moody, Ray, Miller, Robstown and Flour Bluff.

On the girls’ side of the meet, the Lady Trojans had 14 of their 33 member squad competing at this meet for various reasons.

“Although Kennedy Trevino was our only medalist, we were able to get some good times and get a good look at where these girls are. The girls showed improvement from last year,” said Lady Trojan head coach Linda Luna.

“We know what we need to fix and improve, and the girls are going to work hard and get after it.”

Trevino finished third in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:53 the morning after playing an entire game of soccer in San Antonio.

The 4x200-meter relay team of Brianna Cooley, Marriah Menchaca, Jamison Martinez and Camryn Lofthouse placed fourth in their heat with a time of 2:02. In the 4x100-meter sprint relay, the Beeville foursome of Cooley, Menchaca, Martinez and Lofthouse were fifth in their heat and were timed at 55:51.

Trevino was timed in the 800-meter at 2:40 and Mindy Maldonado was close by at 2:43. Neither made the finals. In the 100-meter dash, Cooley was timed in 13:45 for the sprint while Menchaca ran a 13.8.

In the 200-meter dash for the JV girls, Maria Navarro crossed the finish line in 30.27 seconds while Kayla Standridge was in at 34.67. In the 100-meter dash, Sierra Jefferson was timed in 15.1 with teammate Standridge coming across in 14.48. Victoria Mercado ran a 19.75 in the tough 100-meter hurdles for the JV girls. In the 800-meter dash, Janie Cano was timed in three minutes flat. Alyssa Rivera was close back in 3:03, and Emilie Bozant finished in 3:08.

The Jones High JV 4x100-meter relay foursome of Navarro, Mercado, Rivera and Jefferson finished seventh overall with a time of 60.47. That same foursome also ran in the 4x200-meter relay and were fourth in their heat at 2:09. Navarro run a 30.27 in the 200-meter dash while Standridge finished at 34.67.

The Trojan boys team had 20 athletes competing at the event.

“We were very excited to go to our first meet. This is a very competitive meet, and we went out and set personal records in almost all of our events,” said coach Jay Viertal.

The Trojans finished 11th overall at the meet. Freddie Rodriguez ran a 12:39 in the 3,200-meter run to get the team started on Saturday. Gabriel Cardenas was 10th in the 800-meter with a time of 2:10. In the 100-meter dash, Mark Cook crossed the finish line in 11.9. Sean Crooke was timed in 11.56 and Sammy Navarro ran a 11.41. Navarro was fifth in the 200-meter event with a time of 23.2. Cook ran a 24.7 200-meter, and Dominque Aparicio crossed the line in 23.2 for sixth with the same time as Navarro. Rodriguez ran a 5:51 in the 1,600-meter run.

In the 4x400-meter relay, the team of Crooke, Aparicio, Cardenas and Justice Estrada ran a 3:45 at their first meet running together.

In the JV boys competition, Trojan Bryce Koenig placed sixth in the 3,200-meter run with teammate and brother Brent coming across in 12:12.

Derrick Carroll competed in the 800-meter run along with Javier Flores. The two finished close together at 2:17 and 2:18, respectively. In the 110-meter hurdles, Ryan Pena was clocked in 18.87 while Robert Brush closed with a time of 19.56. Tommy Dominguez ran a 12.03 in the 100-meter run.

The foursome of EJ Bryan, Ethan Hodges, Flores and Julian Davila competed in the 4x200-meter relay and crossed the finish line in 1:43 for the JV boys.

In the 400-meter dash, Dominguez finished in 1:03. In the 300-meter hurdles, Pena closed with a time of 47.4, and Robert Brush finished with a clocking of 50.2.

The metric mile (1,600-meter) Bryce Koenig was timed in 5:31 while brother Brent hit the finish line in 5:50. Carroll was a little ahead in 5:28.

In the 4x400-meter relay event, the Trojan foursome of Pena, Bryan, Julian Davila and Flores stopped the timer at 4:40.

The Trojan teams are competing this Saturday at the Kingsville Javelina meet.
