AUSTIN — The Texas Historical Commission (THC) recently recognized Bee County with the 2008 Distinguished Service Award. The honor was presented during a special reception Thursday, April 16, at the THC’s 2009 Annual Historic Preservation Conference in Lakeway.

The award recognizes county historical commissions (CHCs) that have demonstrated a dedication to several of the THC’s programs as well as preservation efforts that lead to a greater understanding of state and local history.

“The commitment of Bee County’s preservation efforts demonstrates an enthusiasm for saving the real places of Texas,” said THC Executive Director Larry Oaks. “Your service has helped to enrich the lives of others through history, ensuring the preservation of our state’s past into the future.”

In attendance at the conference were Bee County Historical Commission members Susan Stasny, Molly Young, Joanna O’Riley, Anna Marie Silvas, Rita San Miguel, Karen Hadden and Barbara Welder.

Some of the exemplary efforts considered for the Distinguished Service Award include advancing youth programs, overseeing historical marker applications, recording oral histories, cemetery preservation and assisting local museums.

Another highlight of the event was a feature speech on the achievements of the Bee County Historical Commission from 1999-2008. The talk was given at a Celebration Luncheon for retiring Executive Director Larry Oaks.

Given by Bee County Historical Commission Chairperson Barbara Welder, the talk showcased recent achievements including the restoration of the Bee County Courthouse, Beeville Main Street, historical markers including the Bethlehem Baptist Church, Jones Chapel Methodist Church, the West Side School for Mexican Americans, Lott-Canada School (a Rosenwald School), St. Rose Cemetery and St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Also highlighted was the restoration of the historic Rialto Theater.
