BEEVILLE – At the Stone Creek Grill restaurant last week, two automobiles representing $140,000 and both ends of the visible spectrum graced the parking lot.

One was red, the other blue.

Both were built by the century-old Morgan Motor Company in England, near the Welsh border. It’s still going strong, making sports cars of a grand tradition. It has just opened a showroom in Beijing.

David Judkins and his wife, Alice, of San Antonio, owned the red one. His model was a Plus 7, built in 2003, complete with a leather belt over the bonnet...uh, hood.

Bob Chamberlain and his wife, Pam, of Wimberley, owned the blue one, an Arrow 8, built in 2005.

In a parking lot full of white oilfield pickups, they added a welcome, if expensive, spot of color.

Both had such a low profile it looked as if they were to be put on instead.

“These cars are not as popular as they used to be,” David said. “Today, kids want all the bells and whistles. Look at the window of that car; you have to raise and lower it by hand. The kids today can’t handle that.”

The couples were en route to an English sports car rally in Rockport.

“Those cars run between $70,000 and $75,000,” Judkins said.

Were they expensive to insure?

Chamberlain was quick to answer.

“Why, not any more than my wife’s Jaguar.”
