Beeville school board trustees may take a serious look at consolidating the four school districts in Bee County.

At a school board meeting last week, Trustee Tom Beasley asked for the item to be placed on a future board agenda.

“We’ve consolidated our own schools, which will save us thousands of dollars every year, and we’ve cut the budget until there is nothing left to cut,” he explained to the Bee-Picayune on Monday. “One of the only options remaining is the consolidation of the four school districts in the county.”

Naturally, a majority of Beasley’s counterparts on the school board would first have to agree to consider the option.

And the trustees, administrators, taxpayers and voters in Pawnee, Pettus, and Skidmore-Tynan school districts would have to be included in any serious discussion on the matter, Beasley admitted.

“But we have to start somewhere,” he said. “I got the ball rolling. I’ve asked for it to be placed on the agenda. If the board wants to take a serious look at consolidating the school districts, we will. And if they don’t, we won’t.”

But Beasley said consolidating the four school districts will save Bee County taxpayers more than a million dollars annually.

“Do we need four superintendents in the county? Four athletic directors? Four head librarians and other administrative personnel?”

Beasley shared his thoughts on school district consolidation during a candidate’s night forum on Monday at A. C. Jones High School.

Beeville ISD Superintendent Dr. John Hardwick Jr. has discussed in the past the idea of consolidating the four school districts as a way of saving money.

Well, I beg to differ, the 80's and little Skidmore-Tynan is a whole different subject. This is 2009 and rarely if ever do Superintendents have any direct contact with students. Especially in big cities. And I would question Mr. Ross's motives since Schools recieve money for every child that is in there seat at school, so if you aren't there they lose money. I graduated in the early 70's couldn't tell you who the superintendent was but I was one of 45 in my senior class. Schools recieve money for every child seating in there seats by a certain time every day, which is why they make such a big deal about attendance.

I agree with you DonSchmidt that superintendents make more money then teachers. And I also agree teachers need to make more for all the hard dedicated work they do everyday. But I don't agree with your comment that superintendent not seeing your children for all the years they attend school. I beg to differ on that comment. I attended Skidmore-Tynan school's in the 80's and I can honestly say that most of us students saw Mr. Ross (our superintendent at the time) in our hallways, at football games, at special events and so on. In fact, there was a day when my younger siblings and I missed the bus (can't remember why) and Mr. Ross came and picked us up in the districts car. All I had to do was call the school and say that I had a test and didn't want to miss it. Apparently someone informed Mr. Ross because he picked us in the districts car. I will never forget Mr. Ross telling us how proud he was of us for not wanting to miss school. Now that is a wonderful educator.

Administrators, superintendents, assistant superintendents are making so much more than the teachers who are with our children everyday.

I would much rather see more Teachers & Teachers given well deserved raises rather than paying for administrators, excessive needless employees sucking the tax payers money like vampires. We need pay our Teachers more and eliminate classroom overcrowding. When a Teacher that is with your child for almost 8 hrs a day everyday isn't paid a 1/3 of what a superintendent is, who in most cases never sees your child for all the years they are in school. Our Teachers aren't appreciated enough & aren't compensated accordingly.

Let's let the tax payers make that decision of combining all the school districts into one. It is always nice to save money, but getting rid of superintendents, head librarians and administration to do that? Who is going to benefit? I am wondering if our kids are going to suffer if this idea will be implemented. Skidmore-Tynan ISD was recently recognized as a outstanding school because of the staff and of course parents. I would hate to see that change because someone thought it would be better to save money then to give superior education that our children deserve. Kudos to those great teachers, superintendents and hard working administration that care about the students and their future. Lets pay them what they deserve!!!!!!
