Senior Kennedy Trevino shook off a few nerves and finished third in the tough metric two-mile event. Her time for the race was 12:40.32.
Elizabeth Montelongo from Floresville had the best time of the event, going the 3,200 meters in 12:22.52 to capture the area crown. G-P’s Megan Hernandez was just ahead of Trevino in second place with a time of 12:36.19.
The trio along with fourth place finisher, Port Lavaca Calhoun’s Leanna Gottschalt (12:49.54) will be in San Antonio on April 25-26 to compete with the other Region IV qualifiers for a trip to the state meet in Austin ion May 9-10.
“Trevino’s strategy was to get out and set the pace slower than what they (the rest of the runners) are used to and see who would change their strategy. She held on to the lead for the first 800 meters before Floresville, G-P and Port Lavaca made a move,” said Lady Trojan track coach Linda Luna.
“I think that was a really smart strategy for her, and it worked. She had the pack thinking the whole first part of the race.”
Trevino also ran cross country this past season but was plagued by injuries and not at full strength in the fall. She came on late in the season to qualify for the Region IV meet along with her cross country teammates, finishing third in the district meet.
“This is the first time Kennedy advances past district in her four years of track. She’s ending her career where everyone wants to end it, sky high,” Luna said.
