A group of 50 or more had gathered Thursday to honor and recognize Frank Montez by naming the county’s road and bridge maintenance yard in his honor.
“I know my grandpa is looking down on us today and smiling,” said Lopez, Montez’s granddaughter. “He would say the workers deserve all the credit because they are the ones that did all of the work.
“This is the type of man my grandpa was.”
Montez was hired by the county in 1984 as a mechanic with the county and was eventually promoted to administrator of the department.
He died in April 2012.
Those who knew Montez all had similar words to say of him.
“He seldom said no to anything in life,” Lopez said. “He would always find a way to get things done.
“The world needs more people like my grandpa. He would take the shirt off his back and expect nothing back.”
Judge David Silva praised Montez for his work ethic.
“Frank was a good man and a great road administrator,” Silva said. “I don’t think I am the only one that would say this.”
Commissioner Eloy Rodriguez said, “What I remember more about Frank than anything is when he was at home, and I called him, and I knew he was very sick, he would say, ‘I am fine.
“‘Do you need anything commissioner?
“‘Can I help you with anything?’
“I thought, ‘Frank is dying, and he still wants to help.’
“That really hits home.”
Ray Gonzales, who worked with Montez and now serves as administrator of the department, remembers fondly the conversations he had with him through the years.
“He said, ‘Ray, I plan on paving every road in Bee County that I can justify paving before I retire,’” Gonzales said. “Sixteen years later, Frank accomplished his goal. Ninety-seven percent of all roads were paved.
“He was a go-getter—one of a kind.”
Martin Montez, his brother, knew just how much work meant to him.
“He is here with us today in spirit,” he said. “Every time we go by this sign, we are going to be touched.
“We know how much he loved his job.”
