In other upcoming contested races of local interest (in addition to the Coastal Bend College election discussed in Wednesday’s issue), the Bee-Picayune editorial staff endorses:

Incumbent Trustee Matt Huie for the Beeville Independent School District Sub-District I position – enthusiastically.

Huie is a hard-working, honest, intelligent farmer/rancher, husband and father who is heavily invested in his faith, family and the BISD. His passion for and dedication to his children and education are evidenced by his recent donation of equipment and time to help with the Moreno Junior High class project to locate the Hefferman graves.

As a proven leader and trustee for six years, he regularly attends BISD board meetings, pays attention and asks pertinent questions, particularly regarding finances. And we agree with Huie that we don’t believe it is a good idea for a town of this size to have siblings serving on a school board.

Early voting begins Monday and runs through May 6 at A.C. Jones High School. Election day is May 10.

The only other contested races involve some city of Beeville residents.

In Ward 3, Benjamin Ray “Benny” Puente Jr. will face incumbent Councilman David Carabajal, who was elected mayor by his council peers two years ago.

In Ward 4, two newcomers to the political scene, Yvonne Dunn and Domingo V. Salinas, are vying for office.

We recommend voting for David Carabajal, because of his experience on the council, and Yvonne Dunn, who brings a record of service in the military and local involvement with the Chamber of Commerce.

Early voting begins Monday and continues through May 6 at City Hall. Again, the election will be held May 10.
