Benjamin “Ben” V. Alcala Jr., 78, of Lake Jackson, died Saturday, April 26, 2014.

A fourth generation Texan, Mr. Alcala was born in Beeville to Benjamin and Elvira (Villarreal) Alcala. He was active in school sports and civic groups, graduating valedictorian from A.C. Jones High School. He attended college at Texas A&M University where he studied petroleum engineering and served in the Aggie Corps.

He retired in 1994 from The Dow Chemical Company after 34 years of service. He was a communicant of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Lake Jackson, where he served as a Eucharistic and Catechetical minister, lector and choir and council member. He was a board member of the Brazosport Symphony Orchestra, serving as treasurer for many years. He loved sports and played on the Dow Basketball League and assisted in the various sporting endeavors of his children. He also coached the Lake Jackson Youth Baseball team which went to the state championships in the 1960s.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Lillie (Villarreal) Alcala; a son, Benjamin (Christie) Alcala III; his daughters, Betty (Steve) Page, Mary (Jerry) Williams and Anita (Wayne) Cromis; and four grandchildren, Robert Matthew Vaughn, Stevie Rae, Leah Beth and Sarah Anne Page.

He was preceded in death by an infant grandson, Jeffrey Andrew Vaughn.

Visitation was held at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 1, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Lake Jackson.

The funeral service was conducted immediately following at 10 a.m. with Monsignor Leo Wlecyk presiding and Father Edmund Eduarte co-presiding.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society and The Brazosport Center for the Fine Arts.

Arrangements were under the direction of Restwood Funeral Home, Clute.
