Former Bee-Picayune advertising manager Richard “Dick” Carter was seriously injured and his wife, Mary, was killed Saturday afternoon in a one-vehicle motorcycle accident just north of Fredericksburg.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety authorities in San Antonio, the accident occurred at 4:21 p.m. as the Carters were driving south on State Highway 16 north of Fredericksburg.

A report filed by Highway Patrol Trooper Christopher Gates of Fredericksburg said that Carter, 62, and his 64-year-old wife were riding on a 2008 Honda Gold Wing motorcycle when his motorcycle left the pavement, struck a concrete culvert and the two were thrown from the vehicle.

Although both were wearing helmets, they suffered severe injuries and were transported by helicopter to University Hospital in San Antonio.

Mrs. Carter was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital and Carter was rushed to treatment for possible internal injuries.

Family friends have said that Carter suffered a crushed pelvis and other broken bones and internal injuries.

He reportedly was scheduled for surgery on Tuesday.

Mary Carter was the sister of former Mayor Kenneth Chesshir and Mrs. Pat Luna, both of Beeville.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Bay City with the Rev. Gerry Cernoch officiating. Graveside service will be held in Beeville at 3 p.m. Saturday at Beeville Memorial Park.

After returning from the Memorial Day weekend, I saw that my office was notified about the Dick and Mary - it has been a pleasure to be their eye doctor for the past five years. My wife and I are saddened to hear of Mary passing away, such a dear lady. We pray for Dick's recovery and for his loss. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family - may God comfort you during this difficult time. Sincerely, Dr. and Mrs. Michael Pickering

PS. If a family member or close friend would be kind enough to keep me updated on Dick, I would greatly appreciate it. LensCrafters @ First Colony 281.494.3435

I am so sad for Dick Carter's loss. Mary was such a fine lady. Dick tapped me on the shoulder 3 weeks ago at Chilis in Bay City to say hello to me as Mary was smiling at me few tables down. Such good people. My prayers and thoughts are with all the famiy. Respectfully, Danny and Malinda Fabela
