Correction: Local golfer Julius Gonzales was erroneously stated as “recapturing” his men’s club championship during the Beeville Country Club’s Memorial Day annual championship.

It was, in fact, his fifth overall title and his third in a row at the club in the championship flight. He is the only five-time club champion.

Elaine Chin has won the women’s title several years in a row at the Beeville Country Club.

Sorry for the mistake and any confusion it may have caused.

BEEVILLE – Both the women’s and the men’s Beeville Country Club golf champions have been there before.

Elaine Chin defeated Pat Gruy 3 and 2 in the 18-hole match-play finals on Monday for the title. Consolation winner was Libby Spires.

Julius Gonzales, a multiple winner of the event, took on last year’s winner Cory Brooke and dealt the former champ a 9 and 8 loss over the 36-hole final day. Craig Billman brought home the consolation trophy in the championship flight.

In the first flight division, Jim Turnbow defeated Danny Spires for the first place trophy. Jimmy Mitchell captured the consolation title in the first flight.

In the second flight grouping, Andy Baldwin won the finals over Ronnie Beck on Monday. James Edwards earned the consolation trophy.

Third flight honors went to Johnny Bond as he defeated Roy Gates in the title match. Consolation honors went to Mike Young in that division.

The junior girls’ winner was Sara Casas, while Jacob Hardwick won the junior boys’ division at the Beeville Country Club. Both junior championships were determined by medal play while the adult divisions were all match-play format.
