BEEVILLE – Classes for the Beeville Independent School District ended today.

That means it is likely that juveniles under the age of 17 might think they can start staying out on public streets late at night.

But Assistant Police Chief Richard Cantu said that could lead to an appearance in municipal court and result in a fine not to exceed $200.

The City Council passed Ordinance 1564, years ago when the city was experiencing a rash of illegal activity on its streets during the early morning hours.

Cantu said the ordinance prohibits anyone under the age of 17 from loitering on a public street or other public venue after 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday or after midnight on Friday or Saturday.

The curfew ends each morning at 6 o’clock.

BPD patrol officers have strictly enforced the ordinance every year since it was passed.

Violators will receive a citation and will be taken home and turned over to their parents or guardians, who will be told when to appear in city court.
