Four people were arrested earlier this week on marijuana charges, according to investigators with the Beeville Police Department and Bee County Sheriff’s Office.

The first two suspects were taken into custody after an investigation lasting almost three months, said Staff Sgt. Richard Cantu.

The investigator reported that the two suspects were students at Coastal Bend College and were suspected of selling the drug on campus.

Cantu said college staff members cooperated in the investigation in an effort to deter drug activity on school property.

The suspects were identified as 19-year-old Mark Anthony Canchola of Refugio and Bernard Hildon Stiles Jr., 34, of Beeville.

Cantu said both men were arrested on May 12 and charged with delivery of marijuana, more than one quarter of a pound but less than five pounds, in a drug-free zone.

The charge is a third degree felony, punishable by a prison term of up to 10 years and a fine of as much as $10,000.

Canchola was taken before Municipal Court Judge Joe Salinas, who set his bond at $3,000.

Justice of the Peace David Garza set bond on Stiles also at $3,000.

Both men later were released on bail.

Deputy Capt. Dan Caddell reported later that two people also were arrested the following day after Deputy Derek Franco made a routine traffic stop on U.S. Highway 181 just south of Skidmore.

Caddell said Sgt. Craig Gisler arrived at the scene and as the deputies searched the vehicle, they found marijuana inside.

The discovery resulted in the arrest of 18-year-old Joshua Scott Cummings and 18-year-old Mona Lisa Perez on charges of possession of marijuana, more than a quarter of a pound but less than five pounds. The offense is a state jail felony punishable by a term of as much two years in a state jail facility and a fine of as much as $10,000.

Deputies reported that the couple also had a year-old baby in the vehicle.

Caddell said no bond had been set on the suspects as of press time.
