BEEVILLE — A former member of Bee County’s Amish community, a 44-year-old leather worker who maintained a shop in his Gaitan Lane home, has been indicted on four counts of continuous sexual assault of a child.

A conviction on each of the counts filed against Ezra Herschberger could result in a 25-year to life sentence.

Bee County grand jurors reviewing the evidence in the case prepared by Sheriff’s Office Investigator Steve Linam agreed that there was enough information to warrant a trial in district court.

Linam alleged that Herschberger committed aggravated sexual assault of a child and indecency of a child offenses involving four girls under the age of 14 from about Feb. 4, 2008, until June 6, 2014.

The indictment listed a number of instances in which the defendant allegedly committed the acts and named all four victims.

Deputies arrested Herschberger three months ago. His bond at the time was set at $400,000.

District Judge Starr Bauer opted to keep the bond at the same amount.

The defendant has been in custody in the Bee County Jail since he was arrested.
