I want to cordially invite our community and, in particular, our military veterans and their families to the Memorial Day services scheduled for Monday, May 25, Memorial Day.

At 10 a.m., the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), will be hosting its annual Memorial Day services at Memorial Park Cemetery, located on the Houston Highway. At 1 p.m., the Bee County Veterans Committee will host its Memorial Day services at the Bee County Courthouse and conclude at Veterans Plaza, across the street from the courthouse. This year, 17 new names of Bee County veterans will be added to the plaza. In addition, the 89 men from Bee County who have been killed in action will also have pavers dedicated in their honor. Our guest speaker will be U.S. Congressman Ruben Hinojosa. Congressman Hinojosa has been a strong advocate for veterans and for veterans’ issues in Washington D.C. We are honored that he has made time from his busy schedule to honor our Bee County Veterans.

Memorial Day is the day our country sets aside for our nation, and communities such as ours, to mourn the loss the 656,654 Americans who have lost their lives in defending this great country that we live in. As former President Ronald Reagan quoted at Arlington National Cemetery: “Most of them (killed) were boys when they died. They gave up two lives: the one they were living and the one they would have lived. When they died, they gave up their chance to be husbands and fathers and grandfathers. They gave up everything for their country, for us. All we can do is remember them.” Pause for a moment and ask yourself how this world, this country, how our personal lives would be different if not for these young men and women who lost their lives defending and protecting their country and our rights as U.S. citizens. The ultimate sacrifice of those killed defending our precious country is meaningless without remembrance from us. Your attendance at these Memorial Day Services to honor our fallen heroes is well deserving.

Sincerely,

Eloy Rodriguez

Bee County Commissioner
