Posted Wednesday, Sept. 24 – Bee County Judge David Silva and all four commissioners thanked the county’s emergency management coordinator, David Morgan, on Monday for his efforts to prepare the county for Hurricane Ike.

“We are very happy it didn’t come here, but I believe we would have been ready if it had,” said County Judge David Silva. “On behalf of the county, I want to thank you for all that you did. I think you did an outstanding job.”

Silva said he visited the emergency operations center on the second floor of the justice center as Hurricane Ike roared toward the Texas coast two weeks ago.

Silva said he was impressed by the organization and hard work he witnessed taking place under Morgan’s leadership.

Commissioners also commended Morgan.

“The hurricane missed us but if a hurricane comes — not if, but when a hurricane comes — I believe we will be ready,” said Precinct 1 Commissioner Carlos Salazar Jr.

Precinct 3 Commissioner Eloy Rodriguez said he was pleased with what he observed at the emergency operations center.

“I was impressed,” he said. “We were doing everything possible (to prepare for the storm).”

Precinct 4 Commissioner Ronnie Olivares said he was impressed with the number of department heads, civic leaders and volunteers staffing the emergency operations center.

“We had a very big turnout,” he noted. “You deserve a round of applause.”

Precinct 2 Commissioner Susan Stasny also complimented Morgan, and thanked all the individuals and businesses in the community who helped to make the storm preparations so successful by donating food, beverages and other necessities to the workers.

She said Morgan came by her office after the storm and talked about the evacuation and recovery efforts undertaken.

“He gave me a list of things that could have been done better,” she said.

Still, Stasny said, “This was a good learning experience for us.”
