Jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday in the felony trial of a Beeville restaurant worker accused of destroying food so that investigators could not determine if it had been contaminated.

Juanita Reyes Perez could be sentenced up to 10 years in prison and fined $10,000 if she is found guilty of the third degree felony offense of tampering with physical evidence.

Jury selection is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. in the main district courtroom, located on the second floor of the Bee County Courthouse.

Bee County Deputies alleged that Perez destroyed a “Breakfast on a Bun” on Jan. 5 with “the intent to impair its availability as evidence in an investigation to determine if the food had been contaminated.”

Perez was working at Whataburger on St. Mary’s St. when the alleged crime occurred, according to court records.

At least two individuals, a 10 -year-old girl and a 32-year-old man, were treated at Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville on Oct. 6 for stomach and mouth problems, according to court records.

Bond was set at $4,000.

Perez is being represented by Corpus Christi attorney Yolanda Gutierrez Burns.

Deborah Branch, assistant district attorney for Bee County, will represent the state.
