The 38-year-old man was pronounced dead at 7:40 a.m., only 40 minutes after the fight began.
Rodriguez was serving a 54 month concurrent sentence for supervised release violations: possession with intent to distributed marijuana and an alien unlawfully found in the United States after deportation.
The condition of 22 other inmates injured in the fight that broke out in two housing units of the prison were not immediately available.
The fight started about 7 a.m. and prison staff were able to quickly secure the area, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Prison.
The cause of this fight was not available on Friday but officials say they are investigating.
“There were no staff injuries and 15 inmates were taken to area medical facilities for treatment of injuries, and seven inmates have been treated for minor injuries at the institution,” according to the release. “The institution is secure, all inmates accounted for and at no time was there a threat to the local community,” the release said. “The FBI has been notified and an investigation has begun...
“The institution remains secured and on lockdown status at this time.”
