The Lady Trojan varsity volleyball team hosted a three-way match on Tuesday night, going up against two tough opponents. The Corpus Christi King Mustangs and Flour Bluff Lady Hornets were in town and handed the Beeville ladies straight game defeats.

“We’re young and still getting to know each other,” said head coach Larry Lollar.

The first game of the evening had the two visiting ball clubs square off against each other in a best of five match. The two teams battled through all five contests before a winner was decided. Flour Bluff edged in front late in the first contest to earn a 28-26 victory. The second game was also closely contested but the Lady Mustangs evened things up with a 25-23 win. The Hornets rekindled their defense and put away the Mustangs 25-21 in the third game to move in front 2-1 in the match. King won the fourth game 25-19 to again draw even with the Lady Hornets. The fifth game is a race to 15 points and the King ladies were the faster on Tuesday night, capturing the match with a 15-9 victory in the fifth.

The Lady Trojans met the victorious Lady Mustangs in the next match. The first match was close but the King ladies opened with a 5-2 lead and they never trailed in the contest. The Lady Trojans came within three at 20-17 and 24-21 but the Lady Mustangs prevailed 25-21 for a 1-0 lead in the match.

Game two was even closer. The teams battled to an 11-11 tie before a 4-0 run put the Lady Mustangs ahead for good. The Lady Trojans fought back and creeped to within one point on several occasions but never could catch the visitors. The final in game two went to King 25-22.

The third contest had the Lady Mustangs jump out to a 7-1 lead and they cruised in from there for a relatively easy 25-14 victory for the match.

“When we got down, no one stepped up to get us back in things,” Lollar said.

“We were going against two of the better clubs in the area and we played right with them at times.

“Hopefully, we can find ourselves in the Sinton tournament and get on a roll.”

The Lady Trojans went right into their match with Flour Bluff and the first game with the Lady Hornets was played closely through the early going. The Lady Trojans worked for 5-5 tie and then took a 7-5 lead, getting a couple of points off Erin Tabb tips at the net. The Lady Hornets fought back and tied the game at 9-9. The Lady Trojans regained the lead in the back-and-forth contest at 12-10 on a service ace from Hillary Hennig. Neither team could grab an advantage until the Lady Hornets eased into a 14-14 tie. The visitors then ran off an 11-2 run in the closing minutes to sting the Lady Trojans 25-16 to open the match.

The Lady Trojans got off to terribly slow starts in each of the next two games. In game two the Beeville ladies trailed 8-3 and in the third game it was a 5-0 deficit that the Lady Trojans had to overcome. The Beeville girls got close in both contests but the Lady Hornets captured game two, 25-21, and game three, 25-17. The three-game sweep gave the Flour Bluff girls the win and set the Lady Trojans’ season record at 4-3.

The Beeville ladies are playing in the Sinton tournament this weekend. Pool play started on Thursday and the tournament will play through Saturday.

The Beeville varsity girls entertained the Goliad Lady Tigers on Friday night and will host Calallen on Tuesday night with the freshman teams hitting the court at 5 p.m.
