Editor:
I was sitting on my backyard patio at 9:15 p.m. on July 4th watching the Town of Refugio send fireworks high in the sky at the county fairgrounds; this in spite of a county wide “Burn Ban.”
I find it hard to understand doing this in violation of the law as well as the waste of dollars.
I have been over this on prior occasions but our city council does not heed common sense. I realize that the dollars spent come from the “hotel, motel tax revenue,” however I firmly believe that the Town of Refugio’s interest would be better served cleaning up our empty, trashy structures with this money.
I know, this money is to be used to entice visitors to Refugio, but I think people are more likely to come to a clean town than to see fireworks.
We have several locations that are more than just empty buildings, one of which I have complained about for years.
For example, the partially burned out shack close to H-E-B grocery store, uninhabitable, and piled high with garbage, not just a fire hazard, but definitely a health hazard.
Oh well, the city council just doesn’t get it, your tax dollars at work...
