Firemen were called to a brush fire on the southbound lane of U.S. 281 approximately 13 miles south of George West near FM 3162 on Monday (July 20) afternoon at 2:58 o'clock. According to the Live Oak County Sheriff's records, a 911 "caller advised there was a car hauler [18-wheeler] that was throwing sparks and a lot of people had tried to get him to stop but he kept going."

Three Rivers Volunteer Fireman Lloyd Grubbs said the 18-wheeler had a blowout and the rim hitting the concrete was probably causing the sparks that were setting off fires in the nearby brush. "I don't know if they ever stopped him," said Grubbs.

In addition to George West and Three Rivers VFDs, helping with the brush fire were the Swinney Switch, Orange Grove and Lagarto VFDs.
