Information on accident still was sketchy this week, according to the Highway Patrol Trooper who investigated it.
Trooper Carlos Martinez said witness statements and evidence found at the scene indicate that the driver of a 2001 Lincoln Towncar may have had her headlights turned off when she drove out of the parking lot at about 7:38 p.m.
Martinez said it appeared that Rose Barnett, 60, of Beeville, who was driving the Lincoln, may not have known her headlights were not turned on when she and her husband, Jerry Barnett, left the parking lot and turned onto FM 351. Martinez did not yet have Jerry Barnett’s age when he spoke to the Bee-Picayune this week.
The trooper said the lights in the parking lot are bright in that area.
However, witnesses said they had noticed that the headlights were not on and Martinez said when he checked the light switch in the vehicle it was not set on automatic, the way most people leave their light switches.
As the Towncar pulled out onto the street a 2005 Ford F-550, driven by 52-year-old Isaias Ramirez of Beeville, was about to turn left into the parking lot. The two vehicles struck head on.
Martinez said Mrs. Barnett suffered a broken arm and lacerations to the head. He said he was unsure how badly Mr. Barnett was hurt.
Both victims were evacuated from the scene by air ambulance helicopters. Martinez said one was a HALO-Flight helicopter but the other may have been a helicopter from Victoria.
The trooper was not sure where the victims were taken for treatment.
The driver of the truck was not injured.
Martinez said he was assisted at the scene by deputies from the Bee County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Beeville Police Department. Also, members of the Beeville Volunteer Fire Department and emergency medical service personnel from Angel Care Ambulance Service were there to help evacuate the victims from the scene.
Martinez said the accident still is under investigation and no citations had been issued as of press time Wednesday morning.
The accident was the second one that day in front of the busy shopping area.
Two vehicles, a 2003 Chevrolet pickup and a 2003 Ford Escort, collided at about 2:50 p.m. in the 500 block of East FM 351 just west of where the more serious accident happened.
Patrolman Jonell Cisneros of the BPD reported that the pickup, driven by James Kunen, 26, of Normanna, was leaving the parking lot near the AT&T retail store when his vehicle collided with the eastbound Ford driven by 50-year-old Wanda Jo Rider of George West.
Rider was taken to Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville the by Angel Care Ambulance Service where she was examined for possible injuries.
That accident was the second one of the day that city officers were called upon to investigate at the shopping center.
At 11:41 a.m. Patrolman Reginald Bedford took a report after a 2002 Ford Explorer struck a parked and unoccupied 2006 Nissan when the driver, 18-year-old Selena Flores of Beeville, tried to park in a slot while going the wrong way in the lot. Bedford reported that driver failed to control her speed, causing the accident.
