Bee County Grand jury indicts inmate for spitting on jailer

Spitting on a jailer booking someone into the Bee County Jail can be costly, as one Beeville resident learned last month.

Bee County grand jurors returned a third degree felony indictment against Rick Anthony Martinez for allegedly doing just that when they met on July 30.

The official charge was harassment by a person in a correctional facility, a third degree felony.

Third degree felonies are punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of as much as $10,000.

Bee County Sheriff’s Office investigators claim that defendant committed the offense on June 15.

District Judge Joel Johnson set Martinez’s bond at $4,000.

Others indicted on July 30 on third degree and state jail felonies included:

•Jake Randall Fox on a charge of unlawful possession of body armor by a felon, a third degree felony.

According to deputies, the defendant had the armor in his possession on April 29.

He had a previous felony conviction on a charge of burglary of a habitation in Live Oak County on July 19, 2006.

Bond was $10,000.

•Oricelda Reyes Vallejo in a two-count indictment on charges of possession of marijuana, five pounds to 50 pounds, a third degree felony, and possession of a controlled substance, cocaine, less than one gram. The second count is a state jail felony punishable by a term of as much as two years in a state jail facility and a $10,000 fine.

Investigators claim the defendant had the drugs on Nov. 6, 2008.

Bond was $10,000.

•John D. Brady, Jr. on a charge of driving while intoxicated, a third degree felony.

Highway Patrol Trooper Shawn Stephenson arrested Brady on Feb. 22.

According to the indictment, the defendant had previous DWI convictions on June 24, 2004, in Dimmit County and on May 22, 2006, in Tom Green County.

Bond was $2,000.

•Ramon Rosas on a charge of DWI, a third degree felony.

According to police, Rosas was driving while intoxicated on Nov. 10, 2008.

He had previous DWI convictions on Feb. 24, 1995, in Hidalgo County, on Aug. 27, 2001, in Victoria County and on Dec. 9, 2008, in Cameron County.

Bond was $2,500.

•Mitchell Knapp and Shaun Jeffery Dunk were named in separate indictments on charges of forgery-passing, both state jail felonies.

According to Beeville Police Department investigators, both men were involved in cashing a $500 check written on the Woodforest National Bank account of a local woman on April 30.

Bond on each suspect was $3,000.

•Alexis Nicole Hathaway on a charge of criminal mischief, $1,500-$20,000.

The charge is a state jail felony.

According to BPD investigators, Hathaway used a knife to scratch the paint of another woman’s car on May 19.

Bond was $1,000.

•Rafael Ruiz, Jr. on a charge of possession of a controlled substance, cocaine, less than one gram, a state jail felony.

Deputies alleged that the defendant had the drug on March 7.

Bond was $5,000.
