For the second time in a week, City Council members took no action following an executive session to consider appointing an interim city manager to replace Ford Patton.

Patton left his position as city manager last Tuesday after a brief executive session, ending a long career at City Hall.

Tabling the matter means that Finance Director and Assistant City Manager Robert Aguilar will remain in charge at City Hall until a replacement for Patton can be found.

Later in the meeting, the council appointed Mayor Pro Tem Mike Scotten and Councilman David Carabajal to a two-person committee to draw up a job description for the city manager’s position.

City Secretary Tomas P. Saenz said he would help the committee members in obtaining copies of city manager job descriptions in other communities.

Mayor Santiago “Jimbo” Martinez told council members that he wanted to have a job description ready soon so the city could begin advertising for applicants for the position.

“We need to discuss whether or not we want to hire a firm to help find candidates,” Martinez said.

He asked Carabajal and Scotten to “put some ideas on paper” for the entire council to consider before approving the description.

In other business, the council voted to:

— Give final approval to the 2008 fiscal year audit as prepared by certified public accountant Ernest Garza of Corpus Christi.

— Authorize a payment of $9,756.90 to Ram-Bro Contracting Inc. of Robstown for the relocation of a water line on Washington Street.

— Approve a request from Fiesta Bee County for its annual Diez y Seis Celebration parade on North Washington Street for Sept. 12.

— Tabled action on a draft copy of new bylaws for the Beeville Economic Improvement Corporation.

The bylaws are being prepared by Noel Valdez, an attorney with the San Antonio law firm of McCall, Parkhurst & Horton, L.L.P.

The council is trying to eliminate possible conflicts of interest on the board but council members had some recommended changes in the documents.

— Authorize Mark Maroney of Urban Engineering in Corpus Christi to draw up specifications for prospective bidders for repair work to be done on the city’s elevated water storage tanks on Mussett Drive, near Coastal Bend College and at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s William G. McConnell Unit.

— Reappointed John Brockman, Arnold Medina, Mayor Martinez and Luis Alaniz to the Bee Development Authority’s board of directors.

— Appointed Mark Spence to the city’s Housing Standards Board to replace the late Charles Hodge Jr.

— Reappointed Joe B. Montez and Dave Moore to the Tax Increment Finance District board and table action on appointing a replacement for Sylvia Hogue.

— Appoint Bee County Tax Assessor-Collector Linda G. Bridge to prepare the city’s 2009 effective and rollback tax rate calculations.

— Approve an agreement with the Coastal Bend Council of Governments for E-9-1-1 service for the City of Beeville.
