A 76-year-old Beeville woman was killed in a two-vehicle accident Tuesday night when she pulled out onto the 3900 block of North St. Mary’s Street into the path of a northbound Chevrolet pickup.

Witnesses said they saw a 1999 Chevrolet Venture driven by Delphine Lauas Lawson pull out of the parking lot of the Bee Family Fun Center, a bowling alley in the north end of the city.

The driver of a northbound Chevrolet pickup, 23-year-old Omar Cano, said the sedan appeared in front of him before he could stop and he struck the vehicle in the driver’s side.

Patrolman Jonell Cisneros, who was sent to the scene at about 9:32 p.m., said he found the driver of the sedan had been pushed from behind the wheel of the car to the front seat passenger side. He said her head was down and she was unresponsive.

Cisneros talked to the two occupants of the pickup. Cano said his legs hurt and his passenger, 17-year-old Stephen Nienhouse, said he was hurting but he was unsure what his injuries might be.

Both men were taken to Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville by Angel Care Ambulance Service with what Cisneros described as unknown injuries.

Justice of the Peace Raul Casarez later pronounced Lawson dead at the scene. Her body was taken to Angelus Funeral Home.

Bee County deputies were blaming a heavy fog for another accident on U.S. 181 south of the city at about 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Little information was available at press time Wednesday but deputies confirmed that a lone, female driver pulled out of a turnaround lane from the northbound lane and into the path of a southbound 18-wheeler carrying a flatbed trailer loaded with bags of dry concrete. The truck struck her vehicle on the passenger side front door.

The woman was taken to Christus Spohn Hospital by Angel Care Ambulance Service but she was responsive at the scene. The driver of the overturned truck was walking around at the scene with a bandage over his eye but he did not appear to be seriously hurt.

The Pontiac sedan remained upright but the Peterbilt truck, from Cantu Transporation of Mission, overturned, spilling dry concrete along the median of the highway.

A few things:

1. Accidents can be avoided.

2. Mistakes happen

3. Age wasn't an issue ( from either party )

4. hate and ill words and feelings will not bring my grandmother back

I just wanted to say that my grandmother was one of the sweetest most loving people I have ever met and she wouldn't appreciate any bad words said on her behalf or others. She was a woman filled with love and forgiveness and I am sure she has forgiven anyone involved. We should never wish death on anyone and should really just learn from this and come together as a community to prevent future accidents.

My grandmother was young at heart and we were expecting many more great years with her, so even to say it was HER time is hurtful.

thank you Beeville for your support and comfort in my family's time of need.

On a personal note, I would like to say that in my trip to Beeville this weekend, I did notice a lack of awareness and care in that town's drivers, especially in the youth. I do think that it would be wise to make the intersections a little more safe and re-educate the drivers on overall awareness and safe interaction / speeds when on the road. I believe that if these things were done and all laws were abided by, this accident and others could be avoided in the future.

Skippy28:First off let me start out by saying.. Were you there?, were you in the vehicle?, were you anywhere near this accident?.. im pretty sure you werent, your just like the rest of the people giving there opinion when they have no clue what even happened. It is not his fault, she pulled out in front of him,it was just an accident. Common sense, if he was driving wrecklessly, dont you think he would have got a citation? I mean if your an adult you must be pretty stupid if that never came in mind.We all dont no how he feels, or knows what he's going thru So you need to think about what you say before you say it. That was very rude and disrespectful..And for the lady may she rest in peace.... -Accidents do happen-, and we all dont know why things happen, only the the good lord knows.... && my prayers go out for this young man, and for the family of they're lost loved one.

Skippy28,

So what you are telling us is that this young man is to blame for this death because of his, "irratic" driving and stupidity. Is he at fault? I don't know and do not have the information you seem to have to be so single-minded.

Nonetheless, ERRATIC driving and a lack of responsibility, or as you remarked, "stupidity" still do not make you judge for this young man. Skippy28 as for you to be convinced he should have died instead of her...yes my friend that is outright unethical.

You asked do I feel this guy should be able to go on with his life with no repercussions for what he has done.

Once again, is he at fault, was it an intentional act of violence, and was he cited for reckless driving or vehicular manslaughter?

Let us know.

Regardless, when any accident occurs and a death takes place...it's NEVER a good thing for ANYONE.

SKIPPY28, once again you owe both families an apology considering you have no idea how it has affected both of them...feelings of grief, guilt, sadness, etc.

In conclusion, I do not have a CLUE about your morality, but it has unquestionably been laid out.

1nana & Rockmedic72...You have no clue about my morality or anything. I still feel that the guy should have paid the price for his irratic driving and stupidity not Mrs. Lawson, and that is not evil. As for the guy grieving i seriously doubt that, instead he is possibly feeling guilt for what he caused. Rockmedic72 answer this: Do you feel this guy should be able to go on with his life with no repercussions of what he has done?

I agree with you Rockmedic72, that was hateful of you to say Skippy28...I believe no matter where anyone is at, when your number is called, your time is up..I'm sure the young man and his family are also grieving..

Skippy28...I agree that parents do need to educate their kids on how to drive responsibly. However, for you to be convinced this young man should have died instead of her is outright evil. I may not know the specifications of the accident other than what was reported, nonetheless you are evidently immoral.

As an EMS paramedic, my colleagues and I have seen many car accidents and when death take place...it's NEVER a good thing for ANYONE!!

The community of Beeville has lost a great woman and my heart goes out to the family of Delphine Lauas Lawson. Understand SKIPPY28, you owe both families an apology because it has beyond question affected both of them.

Parents need to educate their kids on how to drive responsibly. I think the kid that caused this wreck should have died instead of her. The community of Beeville lost a great woman. Condolences go out to the family.
