Children throughout the Beeville Independent School District will celebrate Red Ribbon Week from Friday through Oct. 31.

Everyone is invited to join BISD and thousands of other schools and community organizations across the United States to focus on turning young people away from drugs.

The red ribbons are a way to demonstrate support of the drug abuse prevention program.

All campuses will have activities and themes for this week, which promotes positive choices, good character and a healthy lifestyle for children of every age.

Red Ribbon Week was inspired by the heroic work and sacrifice of U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. In 1985, while working undercover in Mexico, he was abducted and killed.

A movement to honor Camarena’s memory was launched within weeks by his friends and family in his hometown of Calexico, Calif. Clubs were organized and member pledged to live drug free in honor of the fallen agent and others like him.

The clubs gained national attention in the spring of 1985 when two members presented the Camarena Club Proclamation to former first lady Nancy Reagan.
