Lenny Anzaldua, owner of L&L’s BBQ, hosted the first of what is expected to become regular cooking shows at the Refugio restaurant. On Oct. 15, Chef Henan Roseman of San Antonio was the guest chef.

The idea to hold cooking classes in Refugio was patterned after cooking shows on the Food Network, Anzaldua said.

“The cooking shows are very well watched so I thought, if they can do it we can do it here, too,” he said.

The seven-course meal was prepared in part by the guest chef and consisted of buffalo shrimp, French onion soup, chicken parmesan Alfredo, butter garlic potatoes, southern style green beans, and was topped off with a blueberry cheese cake parfait.

Roseman was previously a chef with Carnival Cruise Lines and is currently the chef at the Bistro Café Nordstrom, La Catera Mall in San Antonio.

Born in Trinadad, Chef Roseman believes in healthy cooking.

“The combination of the courses provided a real hearty meal,” Anzaldua said.

Following the two-hour show, each participant was given a copy of the recipes to recreate in kitchens at home.

When the evening was over, guests were well stuffed.

“I probably would not have gone if it weren’t for Lenny’s and Sharon’s insistence,” said Dr. Gary Wright. “Now I can’t wait till Nov. 12 for the next cooking show.”

Refugio resident Carolyn Hughes bought tickets to attend the show at the Boys and Girls Club Silent Auction.

“Thank you for such a fun evening, tonight,” said Carolyn Hughes. “The food was delicious and we all learned a lot from your great tem. I am glad that friendship and laughter were the main ingredients.”

The class was filled early, mostly by word of mouth.

Lenny says the concept is “entertaining made easy,” a spin off of Semi-Homemade, a show that prepares every day cooks to put out a fancy meal and not have to hire a caterer to do it.

November’s show is titled, “Thanksgiving made easy.” A never fail turkey and dressing will be prepared.

The next cooking show is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Nov. 12. Reservations are required.
