The Moreno Middle School students held elections for student council offices in mid September.
Officers for the 2008-2009 year are as follows: president, Morgan Jobe; vice president, Taylor Salazar; treasurer, Eric Dehnert; parliamentarian, Andrea Benavidez; secretary, Tanner Trevino; and reporter, Sara Casas.
The council has already held two meetings to discuss upcoming projects and fundraisers. The officers and representatives Emily Lehmberg and Brandon Nelson represented the group in the Western Week Sesquicentennial celebration. Their motto for the parade float was “Bee-lieve In Us” and they decorated a gator (ATV vehicle) to look like a bee.
Moreno Middle School will host Red Ribbon Week Monday, Oct. 27, through Friday, Oct. 31.
Monday is “Put a Cap on Drugs” (wear a hat); Tuesday is “Don’t Get Tied up With Drugs” (wear a tie); Wednesday is “Sock It To Drugs” (wear crazy red socks); Thursday is “Double Up Against Drugs” (dress like twins); and Friday is “Unmask Drugs” (wear a costume). The council has set a dress code for the costumes that all the students wanting to participate will have to follow. These guidelines are as follows:
• Costumes and makeup must be put on at home not at school
• No fake weapons
• No masks worn during school
• Shoes must be worn
• No offensive costumes (gang related, KKK, etc.)
• No revealing outfits (see through, short skirts or shorts unless leggings are worn underneath, or bare midriffs.
•No blood/gore.
These students are looking forward to a successful and fantastic school year. They are excited to have the opportunity to serve the student body and hope for support from the community in all their projects. The group, which consists of six officers and three representatives from each grade, meets twice a month. They are under the supervision of Tammy Rands, Moreno librarian.
