“All residents of the 15th District are welcome to participate in this rally,” a spokeswoman said. “Bring your signs and come join us as we approach Congressman Hinojosa’s Beeville office to request that he hold a town hall meeting with his constituents on the 25th. We feel that this is something that should be done before he returns to Washington, D.C., to vote.”
Virginia Pendley, one of the organizers, said the group will meet on the lawn of the Bee County Courthouse, march across the street and converge in front of the congressman’s office at 107 S. St. Mary’s St.
The office is just north of the Veterans Plaza at the Bee County Justice Center.
Pendley said about 15 people met at her house Monday to organize what she called a “recess rally” because it will be the only chance local people have to show their opposition to government-run health care during Congress’ August recess.
Protesters gathered at Rep. Hinojosa’s office in downtown Beeville earlier this summer to express concern about the health care issue. They expressed their concerns during a conference call with the congressman that day and Hinojosa hinted that he might be able to hold a town hall meeting here this month.
Recently, Hinojosa said the meeting would likely not take place after all.
Many Bee County residents have gathered twice this year on the grounds of the Bee County Courthouse to express concerns about the government takeover of several of what were once private business concerns, such as automobile manufacturer General Motors, and the government bail out of Wall Street, banks and investment firms. They also have protested higher taxes.
The Tea Party Patriots elected their officers: Anna Diaz, president; Ruben Alvear, vice president; and Deborah Bailey, secretary.
“This organization feels that Congressman Hinojosa should participate in our town hall meeting to answer the questions and concerns of his constituents,” a spokesperson said.
The group will host its own town hall meeting on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Joe Barnhart Bee County Library in Beeville.
Organizers say they have invited Hinojosa to attend the Tuesday town hall meeting.
