It was no doubt an unexpected outcome, particularly for the younger children who sat attentively throughout the stage play and who had fallen to sleep for years as their parents recounted the atrocities of the sinister wolf.
The play, Big Bad by Alec Strum, was one of two plays staged by the Skidmore-Tynan High School Drama Club as part of the school district’s annual Fall Festival.
“(Big Bad Wolf) had a good attorney,” explained Pam Keeton, drama club advisor. “And the audience was the jury and they let him off.”
Cody Coker played the lead role of the wolf. The three pigs were played by Derek Boggess, Sterling McHorse and Ty White.
The play is set in a modern-day courtroom and included a cast of characters from Grimm’s Fairy Tales.
Kamy Kimball, played Fairy Godmother, who served as the Little Pigs’ attorney in the civil trial.
Vicki Lopez played Evil Stepmother, who defended Big Bad Wolf. The three pigs certainly expected some recompense and maybe even jail time for the wolf for the damage he did to their homes — but that was never brought out at trial.
The allegations against the wolf also were never spelled out but which, by all storybook accounts, must have included wanton and willful destruction of property, aggravated assault by threat and trespassing.
Little Pig No. 1 (Boggess) took the stand and recounted how he had built a house of straw, and how Big Bad Wolf had blown it down.
The little pig said he feared the wolf would eat him so he ran to his brother’s house down the lane.
Unfortunately, his brother, Little Pig No. 2, had built his house out of sticks.
Little Pig No. 2 (McHorse) said his home also was blown down by the Big Bad Wolf.
He said he and his brother found refuge at their other brother’s home.
White, who played Little Pig No. 3, testified that he had built his home out of bricks, which withstood the wolf’s huffing and puffing.
Witnesses taking the stand include Little Red Riding Hood (Daisy Luna), Miss Muffet (Justine Thomas), Sydney Grimm (Jennifer Casarez), Grandmother Hood (Breanna Hinds), Bill Woodcutter (Chance Schirmer), shepherd (Taylor Long), and Boy Who Cried Wolf (Chris Patrova).
Will Stridde played Judge Wise Old Person.
The wolf, played by Coker, took the stand in his own defense and swore that he was a vegan who never touched meat or dairy products.
The audience served as the jury, which was asked to return their findings of guilt or innocence by applause.
They apparently believed Big Bad Wolf and their thunderous applause kept him from paying any restitution to the three pigs.
After the jury made its decision, Big Bad Wolf taunted the pigs and the jury, saying he was ready for a steak dinner.
“I thought the play went very well,” said Keeton. “These were Theater 1 students but they showed a lot of potential.”
The drama club also performed Imperfect Proposal by Lisa Parry.
The cast included John Patrick Dougherty, Nikki Guartuche, Williams Hughes, Charlene Doubrava, Juan Arredondo, Johnny Perez, Robert Martinez, Francisco Cavazos and Philip Hughes.
