On Friday, Sept. 11, the students of Austwell-Tivoli Elementary School took time to recognize Patriots Day and to remember the infamous attack on our country eight years ago by Al Qaeda terrorists.

Principal, Stephen Maldonado, briefly outlined the series of events that led the United States into a war on two fronts.

The students in the third grade class were just born when this event happened. They were as helpless as the victims of what is now known as the 911 attack.

Most of the sixth grade class was three or four years old at the time of this disaster. They may vaguely remember that something wrong happened that day eight years ago, because things somehow were not the same at home.

And, things would never be the same for the families and friends of those who died. The high school senior class of 2010 were in the fourth grade when this act of war occurred. Because they were older, they may remember the dark significance of the day better.

The principal reminded the students of their duty as American citizens to not forget the sacrifices made by so many to preserve freedom in our country.

“There are others in uniform who serve and protect,” Maldonado said. “Our fireman, police officers, sheriff’s deputies are heroes as are those who serve in the military. They stand in our place when harm comes our way.”

Joining the principal were Refugio Country Sheriff’s Deputy Phillip Ruiz and Austwell-Tivoli Volunteer Fire Chief, Arnulfo Perez.

“As the years pass and as the children grow, they will understand better the events of history and how they affect the present and the future,” Maldonado concluded.
