On Tuesday, Sept. 15, 22 members and two guests met to conduct the first Beeville Garden Club meeting for 2009-10. Teresa Holland officiated as club president with Kay Bowman, first vice president, Claudine Ramsey, secretary for Londa Trial, and Gwen DeWitt, treasurer.
The theme for the program was Beautifying Beeville. The guest speaker was Buddy Hardy, from the City of Beeville. Hardy addressed the litter problem in Beeville, noting the garage sale signs left behind, the unsightly plastic bags, old tires and how to dispose of them and unlicensed vehicles. Unkempt properties and the downtown landscaping challenges were also addressed. Dennis DeWitt was mentioned as the county inspector. Any inquiries can be directed to City Hall at 358-4641.
The floral arrangement was created by Teresa Holland and Kay Bowman. Beautiful pastel roses were arranged with the darker colored roses at the base and arranged in the massed design. Teresa Holland explained that the club would be using Beeville’s sources for floral needs and the club plans a workshop to learn the art of arranging flowers for those new to the art. The need to help neighbors, if they are unable to water or mow, was cited as kindliness and helpful to promote the curb appeal we want in our neighborhoods.
Program committee chairpersons reported on their program’s progress. The courthouse landscaping and Justice Department landscaping chairperson, Gwen DeWitt, appealed to the club for assistance in planting roses and maintaining the flower beds. Workdays on Sept. 21, 22 and 24 at 6 p.m. were announced. The Garden Club will host the Veterans Day program at A.C. Jones Veterans Stadium on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. The public is encouraged to attend this event, in support of our military.
Refreshments were made by Joyce Hughes, Christie Davis, Nyla Irwin, Della Schwenke, Jane Cecil and Joyce Winters. Door prizes were then awarded.
The table decorations were metal tricycles with fall leaves, made by Nyla Irwin.
