The cold front that blew into town Friday morning, accompanied by a few scattered rain showers, helped lift spirits with the arrival of October.
Our thanks to Michelle Wright, new Beeville Main Street manager, and the crew working downtown to improve the appearance of Beeville’s main shopping area. The colorful fall plants in the landscaped planter areas along Washington Street should encourage more shoppers to stop here and see what our stores have to offer, as well as visit the courthouse square and Joe Barnhart Library.
In the meantime, the fall weather turns our thoughts to football, just as the Trojans were preparing to host longtime rival Gregory-Portland in a district contest Friday night. Good luck, Trojans!
Congratulations to the Beeville Sports Hall of Fame’s four new members inducted in 2009. A ceremony to honor former A.C. Jones High School football standouts J.J. Robinson, Bobby Butler, Edward Antoine and basketball star Norma (Hernandez) Martinez will take place at a banquet at noon Saturday in the Longhorn Room at the Holiday Inn Express. They, like previous honorees, are very deserving of the accolades.
Also, a tip of the cap to the Beeville Police Department and Chief Joe Treviño, who are preparing to host this year’s National Night Out block party.
The event, to be held Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the 100 block of West Corpus Christi Street in front of the courthouse, will be much bigger than in the past and will feature live entertainment, including a rock band, fingerprinting of children, health checks, games and soft drinks.
The chief and Sheriff Carlos Carrizales are hoping for a large turnout at the block party. They, and we, encourage community residents to band together to prevent crime and drug activity.
If more parents would spend time with their children, teaching them right from wrong, and sharing quality time with them at events such as football games, block parties, hunting trips or reading books at the library, this community would not have as much trouble and criminal activity.
