Next Tuesday the Refugio County Commissioners and the Refugio City Council will each hold workshops in conjunction with their scheduled meetings to discuss dilapidated structures.
The commissioners will hold a workshop after their regular meeting at 9 a.m. and the council will hold a workshop at 6 p.m. prior to their meeting.
The recent death of a former county employee in the unincorporated town of Tivoli spurred interest in seeking ways to utilize state statutes to get rid of substandard, abandoned structures.
“Everybody wants to get something done within the law without infringing on people’s rights,” said Judge Rene Mascorro. “The death of the Tivoli man from a swarm of bees brings newfound interest in cleaning up different areas of the county.”
The judge said state statues may be used to give the county the authority to take county equipment onto private property when the health and safety of residents are involved.
