Lady Cats squeak by Banquet in Round Two.

19-25, 25-27, 25-17, 25-19, 16-14

The Banquete Lady Bulldogs may have been 0-5 coming into Friday night’s district contest but they sure didn’t play like it against the Lady Cats. The Lady Cats won three of five games, 25-17; 25-19; and 16-14. The Lady Hounds won two 25-19 and 27-25.

After jumping ahead 8-2, the stunned Lady Cats came back to tie the game at 8 all. But that was the closest the Lady Cats would get as Banquete never relinquished their lead and took game one 25-19.

The majority of game two was dominated by the Lady Cats. The Lady Cats were up 20-13 and victory was in sight. But Banquete continued its charge to tie the game at 22.

Both teams continued to exchange points until a loss in focus at game point by the Lady Cats gave the advantage to the visiting Lady Dogs who again took the game 27-25 to lead the match 2-0.

With their backs against the wall, the Lady Cats knew they had to dig deep if they were to stave off an upset by the Lady Bulldogs.

“We have struggled all season long coming from behind, so this week that was our main focus in all our drills,” said Head Coach Selina Hemphill. “We knew we had prepared and the girls stepped up to the challenge.”

The Lady Cats took game three 25-17 and game four 25-19 to send the match into the final deciding game. The Lady Cats no longer looked at game five as their nemesis.

“They had the confidence and the trust of each other to take game five,” Hemphill said.

The Lady Cats jumped ahead 5-1, but the Lady Dogs wouldn’t go down that easy. In an exchange of points and the game tied at 14 all, the Lady Cats took the lead with a kill from Brittaney Gumm.

With great confidence, junior Katie Bernal, stepped up to the service line to put the potential last serve in play. As the team went into action the Lady Cats watched as the Lady Bulldog’s final attack sent the ball wide and out to give them a 16-14 victory over Banquete.

In a game on Tuesday night, the visiting Lady Hounds of Taft snatched the match right out of the Lady Cats clutches.

The Lady Cats had a great start by defeating the Lady Hounds 25-23 in game one but the Lady Hounds came back and tied the match by taking game two 25-23.

The Lady Cats rebounded and didn’t look back in game three to reclaim the lead 25-18. After dominating for most of game four, the Lady Cats were up 24-19 but just couldn’t seem to get that illusive game point to clinch the win and lost 27-25.

The Lady Hounds’ tenacity defeated the Lady Cats 15-10 in game five to take sole possession of third place in the first round of district.
