Andrew “Andy or Smitty” Schmidt, 86, of Beeville, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009.

He was born Sept. 4, 1923, in Comal County to Bruno and Lydia Schaefer Schmidt. He was a clock and watch repairman, served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Beeville. He served as commander of the American Legion Post 274, advocate for VFW Post 9170, a volunteer at Christus Spohn Hospital and will be remembered as Mr. Santa Claus.

Mr. Schmidt was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Ida Schmidt.

Survivors include his companion, Frances Pirko Thompson of Beeville; two stepchildren, Tracy (Patty) Thompson and Lee Ann Thompson; one grandson, Jacob Thompson; one granddaughter, Norma Thompson; two great-granddaughters; one sister, Frances Zombro; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Galloway and Sons chapel with the Rev. Bill Duke officiating.
