Tuesday, Oct. 20, was the Beeville Garden Club’s monthly meeting with Janet Carter as program coordinator. Janet’s program was Organic Products, which suggested some of the following helpful tips:
•Liquid seaweed rids spider mites.
•Webworm control equals 9 percent vinegar, 2 oz. orange oil, little bit of molasses, little bit of dish soap (do not get on green leaves).
•Plant Wash rids brown patch and blight in yard.
•Orange oil and water rids ants.
•Janet’s logic is keeping the soil healthy is the bottom line of gardening.
•A soil amendment for alkaline caliche soil consists of lava, sand, compost, molasses and rock materials (rock phosphate).
A new member, Megan Winthrop, was voted in. Pat Walker was a guest and 24 members were present.
Londa Trial read the minutes from the last meeting. Gwen DeWitt read the treasurer’s report. Teresa Holland, president, asked for committee reports on the upcoming Veterans Day program at the Veterans Memorial Stadium on Nov. 11 at 11:45 a.m. and the annual Table and Floral Show on Nov. 14 at the First Baptist Church Activity Center.
The upcoming zone meeting at Aransas Pass on Nov. 5 will have five members from the club representing Beeville’s Garden Club.
The club’s courthouse landscaping project, partnering with the Master Gardeners of Beeville, Susan Fields, Patty Alexander, Duane and Sherrie Caruso and Gwen and Dennis DeWitt, planted yellow mums and purple petunias, as well as applying an application of cotton meal and alfalfa to the garden. One-third of the project was accomplished by this hard work.
Refreshments of spinach sandwiches and pimento sandwiches with cookies and punch were served by Sally Amthor, Susan Fields, Camilla Palmer and Gladys Gaithright. The creative floral arrangement was by Joy Winters, which was a small pumpkin topped with a clear globe with yellow flowers. Several bouquets of flowers were won as door prizes.
