No one was injured Tuesday morning when an electrical short sparked a small fire in the attic of a yellow wood-frame home at 1633 W. Corpus Christi St.

Resident Victor Cantu was across the way working about 10 a.m. when someone told him that there was a man at his house near the Lightburne Street intersection. Cantu, who was renting the home, walked over and the man said, “Do you know your house is on fire?”

The man, whose identity was not known, had already called 911, sending firefighters and police speeding to the home.

Beeville Fire Chief Donnie Morris said that firefighters opted to remove the smoldering insulation and go in through the attic instead of cutting a hole in the roof.

It took about an hour, he said, before the fire was extinguished. He said the blaze was ignited from an electrical short under the insulation.

Cantu, who was watching as firefighters moved everything from the room below the fire and covered the floor with tarps, said, “That is my daughters’ room. Luckily they are in day care right now.”
