Longhorns to play San Diego in Bi-District round of playoffs

The 31-2A District Champion Longhorns will travel to San Diego High School this Friday for a 7:30 match up for the Bi-District round. The George West Longhorns, coming off an impressive 10-0 season, will face the 32-2A District Runner-Up San Diego Vaqueros who come into round one with an 8-2 season and 4-1 district record.

San Diego is averaging 22 points to their opponents 19. The victories for the season were Aransas Pass, Freer, John Paul 2, La Villa, Riviera, Bishop, Premont and Santa Rosa. The only regular season loss was to Taft 48-21 and the only district loss to Hebbronville 22-12. Freer, the only opponent in common with the Longhorns was a 14-7 victory for the Vaqueros. The Longhorns defeated Freer 48-6.

San Diego has three running backs with 500 or more yards for the season. Joe Gallegos with 92 carries for 583 yards, Marty Saenz with 83 carries and 659 yards, and Cody Garcia with 63 carries for 500 yards. Quarterback Albert Lopez has 32 completions out of 64 attempts for 516 yards. Receiving for the Vaqueros’ is Joe Gallegos with 11 receptions for 207 yards and having over 100 yards each for the season is Joe Jones and Fidel Ramirez.

The Longhorns who are averaging 37 points a game to their opponents 7.9 are easily the favorites going into the game. Albert Gamez who took over for the injured Seth Pipkin, has completed 7 of 13 attempts for 152 yards. Before his injury Pipkin had 10 completions of 27 attempts, which resulted in 140 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The Longhorns, known more for the success of their running game, have Cayleb Holt with 1035 yards for the season followed by Shannon Taylor with 734. Coming into the final game of the season, Holt led the team scoring with 16 touchdowns, Taylor with 7. Taylor narrowed that gap and proved himself to be a real scoring threat with four touchdowns and a conversion in the Three Rivers game. Gamez finished the season with 8 touchdowns and Joseph Lopez with 4. Receiving leaders for the season are Holt with 88 yards, Clayton Whitley with 70 yards and again Gamez with 40. Whitley, Gamez and Zane Schorp all had receiving touchdowns for the season. These Longhorns are responsible for 4,105 offensive yards for the regular season.

On the defensive side, having only nine games’ stats available, Longhorn leaders have been Lucas Yocum with 73 tackles, followed by Clayton Whitley 51, Dylan White 41, Aaron McCabe, Shannon Taylor 33, Thaddeus Pierce 29, Joseph Moore 25, Riley Rocha 22, Zane Schorp 19, Michael Fuentez 18, and Enrica Nieto with 15.

These season numbers will change with the addition of last weeks final statistics.
