The Bi-District round will be played on Friday, November 13th at the West Oso Stadium in Corpus Christi. Game time is 7:30.
The Bulldogs, 8-2 for the season and 5-1 in district play are familiar with the Rivera Seahawks. Rivera ended the season 5-5 and 2-3 in district play. There was a three-way tie with Riviera, Santa Rosa and Bishop. Riviera came out on top and will represent District 32-2A as the third place finisher.
Riviera lost to Three Rivers 18-0 in zero week of this season. Other losses were Bruni 12-14, Santa Rosa 6-18, San Diego 13-25, and Hebbronville 0-40. Wins were 21-0 over Agua Dulce, 33-6 over Benavides, 31-16 over Premont, 22-0 over Premont in a district encounter, and 35-10 victory over Bishop that put them in the play-offs.
Running duties for the Seahawks over the season has been spread out among 4 players, all who have over 200 yards rushing for the regular season. They are Wade Moore with 248 yards, Heston Van Fleet with 210, A.J. Caballero 265 yards, and Justin Jimenez with 258 yards. This team can’t be taken lightly. Van Fleet is a threat from the quarterback position with 627 yards this season. No defensive stats were available.
Bulldog quarterback John Morgan Ross enters the play-offs with 39 completions out of 72 attempts (.542) with only 5 interceptions for 766 yards and 6 touchdowns. Ross also has 212 yards on the ground and has played defense in only the last few games, but has made game saving interceptions as well as 10 tackles. Ross also has 3 rushing touchdowns.
Rushing leader is Trevor Wells. Wells rushed little this past week due to soreness in his arm from a hyper-extended elbow he suffered against Cotulla. He still finishes the regular season with 1,031 yards on 118 carries, his longest run being 80 yards. Wells also had 18 pass receptions for 383 yards, giving him a total of 1,414 yards total offense regular season for his senior year. Wells also has scored 78 points for the year, including rushing touchdowns, pass reception scores and conversions. On the defensive side of the ball, Wells has 76 total tackles.
Helping with the rushing is Jeff Whitney. Whitney has 88 carries for 494 yards. On the defensive side Whitney finishes the regular season with 109 total tackles, 55 solo/54 assists and includes 15 of those for a loss and a 10.9 tackle per game average. Troy Chowns and Larry Hatten have come in and picked up the slack from the missing Ian Smith. Chowns has 215 yards rushing and 89 yards pass receptions. Hatten has 285 yards rushing and 57 from pass receptions. On the defensive end, Chowns ends the regular season with 75 tackles and Hatten 58. Chowns and Hatten both have 2 interceptions as well.
Another senior leader is receiver Wes Roberts who has 6 receptions for 121 yards. Roberts also has 41 season tackles and an interception. Junior Jose Sanchez came up late in the season but has proved to be a pivotal player for the Bulldogs. Sanchez has taken over kicking duties and is currently 12 for 15 for PAT’s and has 1 of 1 field goal for 22 yards. Defensively Sanchez has 39 tackles in 4 games.
Playing for the Bulldogs this year have been Wes Roberts, Jose Sanchez, Larry Hatten, Gage Crawford, Josh Perez, Patrick Eaves, John Morgan Ross, Johnny Hernandez, Jonathan Lopez, Trevor Wells, Ty Brown, Kaleb Gee, Jeff Whitney, Ian Smith, Troy Chowns, Kaleb Tichavsky, Joseph Rodriguez, Sammie Simmons, Sophiab Pon, Justin Ruiz, Landry Newport, Jacob Muniz, Brad Bellows, Brodie Ruiz, James Lee, Jeremy Gomez and Jake Baker.
The Bulldogs will still be without Ian Smith who went out in the first quarter in game 6.
Before ending his season, Smith had over 500 yards rushing and had 41 total tackles. All the other Bulldogs should be healthy and good to go.
